Do I Need a Switchboard Upgrade for Solar or a Battery?

Quick answer

Sometimes. Older switchboards with ceramic fuses, no safety switches, no spare room or signs of wear may need work before solar or a battery can be connected safely. It is checked at the site inspection and quoted separately, so you see it before you agree to anything.

Why does the switchboard matter?

Solar and batteries connect at the switchboard. It has to safely take new circuit breakers, isolators and, for backup, a way to separate the home from the grid. An old or crowded board may not have the room or the protection modern equipment needs.

What do installers look for?

  • Ceramic or rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers.
  • No safety switches (RCDs) on circuits.
  • No spare room for new breakers.
  • Signs of heat, damage or old wiring.
  • Backup requirements. Separating essential circuits for blackout backup often means rearranging the board.

Is it just about safety?

Safety comes first, but it is also about compliance and reliability. A board that is overloaded or poorly arranged can trip, fail or make faults harder to find.

How is it quoted?

At Panda, switchboard work is checked at the site inspection and quoted separately, so you see it before you agree. Our battery base prices cover a standard install; additional work such as switchboard upgrades, three-phase changes or complex installs is reviewed and quoted on its own.

Can I send a photo first?

Yes. A clear photo of your switchboard with the cover open (don't touch anything inside) helps us flag likely work before the inspection.

A real example

We installed a 16.64 kWh GoodWe battery in Gymea Bay. As with every job, the switchboard was part of the site inspection, so any work it needed would have been in the quote before the install, not added afterwards.

Next step

Include a switchboard photo with your proposal request and we will tell you upfront if work is likely.

FAQs

How do I know if my switchboard is old?
Ceramic fuses you have to rewire, no safety switches (RCDs), a cramped or crowded board, or signs of heat or damage all suggest it may need attention. Send us a photo.
Is a switchboard upgrade included in the battery price?
Not in the base price. Additional work such as switchboard upgrades is reviewed and quoted separately after inspection.
Can I keep my old switchboard?
Often yes, if it is safe, has room and meets the requirements for the new equipment. The electrician decides that at the inspection.
