Not always. A battery pays its way by covering evening power you would otherwise buy. If your evening use is small, a large battery has little to do. A smaller battery, better use of daytime solar, or no battery at all can be the right answer. Your bill shows which one fits.

Why does usage matter so much?
A battery stores solar from the day and uses it in the evening, so you buy less power then. The benefit comes from the power you avoid buying. If your household uses little power in the evening and overnight, the battery has less work to do each day.
How do I tell if I'm a low energy user?
Look at two things:
Evening and overnight use. If your bill or smart meter data shows small usage after sunset, a battery has less to replace.
Exports. If you export little solar, there is not much spare to store.
Low evening use plus low exports means a battery is unlikely to stack up on money alone.
What are the alternatives?
Use more of your solar. Timers and moving loads into the day can cut your bill with no extra equipment. See the best time to run appliances.
A smaller battery. Modular batteries come in smaller sizes; matching the battery to your actual evening use avoids paying for capacity you won't use.
Check your plan. Your supply charge and rates may matter more than storage.
Wait for a change. If you're planning an EV, a pool or electric heating, your usage will change. Plan the battery around that.
When can a battery still make sense?
You want blackout backup.
Your usage is about to grow.
You are on a time-of-use plan with an expensive evening peak.
You value using your own solar for its own sake.
A real example
We installed 16 kW of Jinko panels with a 9 kWh GoodWe battery in Pooraka. A modest battery like this suits a home whose evening use is moderate: it covers the evening without paying for capacity the household would rarely use.
An honest answer
Send us a recent bill. If a battery won't suit your home, we will tell you, and point you to what will help instead.

What affects the price: battery size, brand and inverter, whether you already have solar, backup wiring, and any additional work at your home.

There is no fixed number. What matters is how much you use in the evening and overnight, and how much solar you export. Your bill and inverter app show both.
Is there a battery small enough for a low-use home?
Many batteries come in modules, so smaller sizes are available. A smaller battery matched to your evening use can make more sense than a big one.
Should I still get a battery for blackouts?
If backup matters to you, a battery may be worth it for that reason alone. That is a lifestyle decision as much as a money one.
